Copan moves into Europe

The US venture capital firm has appointed a former Amazon director for European expansion.

US venture capital firm Copan has today announced the appointment of Spencer Hyman, a former Amazon executive, as director of its London office.

Hyman will head Copan UK, where he will be responsible for providing guidance, strategic planning and support to the firm's portfolio companies. Prior to joining Copan, Hyman was retail director of technology products at Amazon.co.uk, the European subsidiary of Internet retailer, Amazon.com. As retail director, Hyman built the company's team of experts on electronics, software and video games.

Copan hopes that its London base will provide its portfolio companies with a presence in the UK market to help enable growth. The firm invests in early stage software and IT specialists in the US which are looking to expand their operations worldwide. Its portfolio includes EmWare, KeyStroke, InfoMove, and LizardTech. Copan has offices in Munich, London and Seattle.

Commenting on his appointment, Spencer Hyman said: “The purpose of the London office will be to provide our US portfolio companies with high quality due diligence for any future European expansion. As yet, we have no plans for making investments in Europe.”
