Denham hires Bert Koth to bolster natural resources

Former BHP Billiton executive will join Denham’s London office to focus on mining investments.

Denham Capital Management, an energy technology-focused private equity firm, has recruited Bert Koth to join its natural resources investment team.

Koth will join Louis van Pletsen, partner and head of Denham’s London office, and managing partner Carl Tricoli in managing investments in gas, coal, oil, timber, agriculture, metal and mineral mining worldwide.

Formerly of mining company BHP Billiton Koth has more than 12 years of experience in the global resources industry, having worked on mergers and acquisitions, strategy and business development.

Prior to BHP Koth was vice president in the mining and minerals team at Deutsche Bank’s London office. He was also an associate at Dutch owned merchant bank, ING Barings in Amsterdam and Johannesburg.

“Bert has an outstanding track record in the natural resources transactions both as a principal investor and as an advisor,” Stu Porter, founder and chief executive officer of Denham, said in a statement.

Boston-based Denham manages approximately $4.3 billion of capital, and invests globally. Recent transactions include the $150 million investment into BioTech, a South African renewable energy firm, and an $80 million investment in Plantation Energy, an Australian biofuel firm.
