Britain’s dominance of the European private equity market can be seen in a PEI study of headquarter locations.

The number of UK-based fund managers is almost three times that of its nearest rival, France, and accounts for more than a third of the total. So far in 2016, $30 billion has been raised by funds based in the UK, compared with $858 million in Italy, which has the smallest number of managers of the countries examined.

However, it is Paris-headquartered Ardian that leads Europe in terms of fundraising this year – strongly aided by Ardian Secondary Fund VII, which, at $14 billion, is the largest vehicle to close so far in 2016.

Three months after Brexit, there have been few visible effects on the private equity market. However, in coming years, the UK may be facing some tougher competition.
