John Canning may be stepping back his leadership role at Chicago-based private equity firm Madison Dearborn Partners, but he's as interested as ever in embracing risk, especially in the form of filmed entertainment. According to a recent Chicago Tribune article, Canning has invested $500,000 in Ideal Partners Film Fund, a “slate” of films managed by a former Morgan Stanley banker. It is not the first time the private equity pioneer has dabbled in movies. He backed a 2005 film written by actor John Turturro called “Romance & Cigarettes” and starring James Gandolfini, Susan Sarandon and Kate Winslet. After opening in Europe two years ago, the film is enjoying a limited release in the States. Canning said of his interest in film finance: “I'd rather not lose my money, but it's for fun.” Bet you won't find that language in the marketing docs for Madison Dearborn's new $10 billion fundraise.
