Summit Partners has hired Darren Black as a managing director to focus on healthcare and life sciences investments in the firm’s Boston office.
In the newly created position, Black will work alongside managing director Craig Frances, who is based in Menlo Park, on Summit’s $2.7 billion growth equity fund.
Black was previously a managing partner at SV Life Sciences, where he worked for 10 years and focused on healthcare information technology and pharmaceutical services investments. Prior to joining SV, he co-founded specialty contract research service businesses ClinCare and PharmaStar and he worked as a healthcare consultant for Accenture.
Summit has also hired Thomas Tarnowski as a principal in London to lead the firm’s European healthcare and life sciences team and work on Summit’s €1 billion European growth equity fund. Tarnowski previously lead Triton Partners’ Nordic healthcare team, where he focused primarily on healthcare services and medical technology businesses.
Summit has investments in healthcare and life sciences companies including healthcare software company COMS Interactive, hospice care provider Heart to Heart Hospice and Solutionreach, a provider of SaaS-based patient engagement and communication. The firm invests in a variety of sectors in addition to healthcare and life sciences, such as business services, communications technology, consumer products, education, energy and financial services.
Summit has raised about $15 billion in capital since its founding in 1984 and has invested in more than 380 companies.
