Corporate venture activity slows down in second quarter, says new report

Although corporate venture firms invested over $1.2 billion in nearly 200 deals in the second quarter of 2016, there was still a slowdown in overall VC activity for this period. This is one of several findings made by a just released report by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association based on Thomson Reuters data. The report also revealed that over 20 percent of all venture deals for this period had corporate venture involvement, making it the sixth straight quarter to do so. However, for the same timeline, there was still a 17 percent drop in the number of deals with corporate venture components. And, of all the sectors, software continues to be the most popular, nabbing over $415 million in 93 deals, which represents 33.6 percent of corporate venture money invested and about 47 percent of deals. Biotech came in second, snagging $407 million in 25 deals, comprising 33 percent of corporate venture dollars deployed and 12.6 percent of deals.
