Blackstone replaces chief legal officer

Simpson Thacher M&A chief John Finley will fill the vacancy left by retiring CLO Robert Friedman.

John Finley has been hired as chief legal officer for The Blackstone Group, effective 1 September.

He will succeed current chief legal officer Robert Friedman, who will continue at New York-based Blackstone for a unspecified  period of time before retiring, according to a statement.

Until his start-date, Finley will continue as a partner at law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, where he is head of the global mergers and acquisitions group.

Finley, who joined Simpson Thacher upon his graduation from law school in 1981, will be a member of Blackstone’s executive committee.

Stephen Schwarzman, Blackstone's chairman and chief executive officer, said in a statement the hiring was “invaluable to [Blackstone] as our business continues to expand across both product lines and geographies”.

The publicly listed Blackstone was founded in 1985. The firm placed 7th in PEI’s annual ranking of the largest 300 private equity firms in the world with $31.1 billion in capital raised over the last five years.
