Capital Dynamics has hired Marcelo Moraes as a managing director to head the firm’s effort in Brazil, the firm announced in a statement. Moraes started with the firm last week.
Moraes was formerly a managing director and partner at Stratus Group, a Brazilian mid-market private equity firm, as well as the chairman of the VALE Fiscal Council, a mining company. At Stratus, Moraes helped raise and manage the Brazil Mezzanine Infrastructure Fund, which was a joint venture between the firm and Darby Private Equity.
In addition to his role at Stratus, Moraes is also a member of the board of directors at the Brazilian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association.
Capital Dynamics closed its Rio de Janeiro office last year after losing two of its Brazilian heads to Hamilton Lane in September, Moraes told Private Equity International. Since then, the firm has transferred its efforts to São Paulo, where Moraes is tasked with building up a new team and reaching out to the firm’s network of investors, which includes pension funds, high net-worth individuals and family offices.
Capital Dynamics was founded in 1999 and operates several strategies, including funds of funds, direct investments, separate accounts and structured private equity products. In addition to São Paulo, the firm maintains offices in London, New York, Zurich, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Silicon Valley, Munich, Birmingham and Zug.
