European venture and growth capital firm Index Ventures has invested €15 million in global matchmaking site be2.
Index partner Dom Vidal will take a seat on the board of be2, which launched its first website in Germany in 2004 and has since grown to 12 million members in 34 countries. Vidal said in a statement that be2’s services represent a sizeable growth opportunity and pointed to the company’s success in multiple international markets.
Vidal previously served as chief executive of Yahoo! Europe from 2004 to 2007 before joining the London office of Index.
He manages the Index Venture Growth I fund, which closed on €400 million in January 2008 and focuses on technology and life science companies, as well as those in media, retail and cleantech sectors. The fund is also intended to compliment Index Ventures IV, which focuses primarily on seed and early-stage investments.
Index, which has offices in Geneva, London and Jersey, has been active in technology venture investing since 1996. Its recent exits include MySQL, an open source database company acquired by Sun Microsystems in January in a $1 billion deal.
