Bert Kwan, a former head of ASEAN private equity at Standard Chartered Private Equity (SCPE), has been appointed managing director of South-East Asia focused firm Northstar Group.
In his new role, Kwan will be responsible for originating and executing private equity investments across the region, he wrote on his LinkedIn profile.
Kwan joins Choon Hong Tan and Chee Yann Wong, who are also managing directors at the firm. In October last year, Ashish Shastry, a former managing partner at Northstar, left the firm for KKR to become its head of South-East Asia.
A spokesperson from Northstar confirmed Kwan's appointment with Private Equity International.
Singapore-headquartered Northstar manages over $2 billion of assets across five private equity funds. The firm is currently in the process of deploying its 2014-vintage $810 million Northstar Equity Partners IV, which targets investments in consumer-focused businesses in South-East Asia.
Kwan spent six years at SCPE as managing director and head of its ASEAN business. During his time at the firm, he led investments in the region including Korean water and energy company Kolon, Singapore-based food business Phoon Huat and restaurant chain Crystal Jade, and Vietnam-based mobile wallet service M_Services.
Kwan and former head of private equity Joseph Stevens were both let go in November, following SCPE’s announcement in late-2015 that it would reduce its private equity exposure and focus on its core strategies.
Earlier this month, SCPE led the $244 million acquisition of Shanghai Siyanli Industrial Company, a health and beauty chain headquartered in Shanghai.
