Tropic Biosciences raises $10 mln

Tropic Biosciences said June 13 that closed a $10 million Series A round led by Pontifax AgTech and Five Seasons Ventures. The round included several co-investors, including Tekfen Ventures, Emerald Technology Ventures, Bits x Bites, Midven-RSF and the family offices of Gigi Levy-Weiss and Antonio Moreira Salles. Tropic Biosciences is developing plant varieties in the tropical agriculture industry using CRISPR Gene Editing.

Back Market raises $48 mln

Back Market said June 13 that it raised $48 million in funding. Investors include Groupe Arnault, Eurazeo, Aglaé Ventures and Daphni. Total investment in Back Market comes to $55 million. Back Market is a marketplace dedicated to refurbished electronic products and appliances (smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other products).

Broncus Medical snaps up $15 mln Series A

San Jose, California and Shanghai-based Broncus Medical Inc, a developer of diagnostic and therapeutic technology for lung disease, has raised $15 million in Series A funding. The investor was Intuitive Surgical.

Breather secures C$60 mln more in Caisse, Temasek-led round

Montréal-based flexible workspace provider Breather has raised C$60 million in a follow-on-financing, bringing total funding to about C$150 million. The latest round was led by Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and Singapore’s Temasek. Other investors included Ascendas-Singbridge. Founded in 2013 by CEO Julien Smith and CCO Caterina Rizzi, Breather has scaled its presence in the global workspace rentals sector to 10 cities, including New York City, San Francisco and London. It now operates close to 500 spaces. Breather’s other investors include Menlo Ventures, Valar Ventures, RRE Ventures, Slow Ventures and Real Ventures, all of which backed its Series C round in 2016.

Alta Partners gathers $130 mln for healthcare fund

Alta Partners, a healthcare-focused venture firm, has raised $130 million for its new fund. Alta Partners NextGen Fund I LP will focus on developing novel biotherapeutics and technology-enabled healthcare services.

Romulus Capital has raised over $83 million for its third fund, according to an amended SEC filing. No target was listed on the document. Boston-based Romulus Capital is an early-stage venture firm focused on tech companies.

Smart Global Holdings to buy VC-backed Penguin Computing for $85 mln

Smart Global Holdings Inc has agreed to acquire Penguin Computing Inc, a provider of specialty compute and storage solutions, for up to $85 million. KKR Credit provided the debt financing for this transaction and Needham & Company LLC was financial adviser to Smart Global Holdings. Penguin's backers include vSpring Capital, San Francisco Equity Partners, Weber Capital and Convergence Partners, according to Crunchbase.
