San Diego-based Kneron, a provider of edge artificial intelligence solutions, has named Daniel Yuan as chief architect. Yuan is the former chief architect of Kingdee Software. Kneron's backers include Alibaba Entrepreneurs Fund, CDIB, Himax Technologies, Inc, Qualcomm, Thundersoft, Sequoia Capital, CYZONE and Horizons Ventures.

Jim Keohane, president and CEO of Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP), said he will be retiring in March of 2020. Keohane joined HOOPP in 1999 as manager, equity trading, and became CEO in 2012. He will continue to lead the Canadian pension fund as it searches for a successor. HOOPP said it doubled in size, growing to $79 billion in net assets, during Keohane's tenure as CEO. Toronto-based HOOPP is the retirement plan for Ontario’s hospital and community-based healthcare sector. It invests in private equity through HOOPP Capital Partners.

Multi-stage investor Norwest Venture Partners announced the promotions of Rob Arditi to general partner, and Stew Campbell and Ran Ding to principals at the firm. The three work on Norwest's growth equity team. Arditi was promoted from partner. He joined the firm in 2009 as an associate. Campbell joined Norwest as a senior associate in 2012. Ding had been an associate since he joined in 2011.

Gerry Schwartz and Heather Reisman have given $100 million to the University of Toronto (U of T) to create a complex anchoring a cluster of artificial intelligence, biomedical and other technology researchers. The soon-to-be-built 750,000-square-foot Schwartz Reisman Innovation Centre will also support U of T's entrepreneurship network and student and faculty-led startups. U of T said the donation is the largest in its history and for Canada's innovation sector. Schwartz is the founder, chair and CEO of Canadian private equity firm Onex Corp. Reisman is the founder, chair and CEO of Canadian book retailer Indigo.
