He also serves as executive chairman of Clarus portfolio company NanoString, chairman of Biogen IDEC and on the board of Theravance.

Rob Solomon has joined Chicago-based social commerce website Groupon as president and chief operating officer. He previously was a venture partner with Technology Crossover Ventures and, before that, was president and CEO of travel search site SideStep. Groupon has raised nearly $35 million in VC funding from firms like Accel Partners and New Enterprise Associates.

Antonio Rodriguez, former CTO of HP's consumer imaging and printing division, has joined Matrix Partners as a general partner in the firm's Waltham, Mass. office. Matrix also announced the opening of a New York City office, which will be headed by Nick Beim. Beim will relocate from Massachusetts.

Gina Bianchini is stepping down as CEO of Ning, in order to become an entrepreneur-in-residence with venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. The news was first reported by All Things D. Bianchini is a co-founder of Ning, which offers an online platform for people who want to create their own social networks. Her fellow co-founder, and Ning chairman, is Marc Andreessen, who is one of two Andreessen Horowitz partner. She will be succeeded by Ning CFO Jason Rosenthal.

Richard Marsh and Jonathan Freuchet-Sibilia have joined Encore Ventures, the secondaries unit of European VC firm DFJ Esprit, as a partner and investment manager, respectively. Marsh previously was an investment manager with Oxford Capital Partners, and will take over responsibility for assets acquired late last year from 3i Group. Freuchet-Sibilia previously was an associate with Jefferies International.
