Microsoft is planning on acquiring Pittsburgh-based Avere Systems, a data storage company, according to a blog post on the former's website. No financial terms were disclosed. Avere is backed by Menlo Ventures, Norwest Venture Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Tenaya Capital, Western Digital Capital and Google Inc.

Canadian mobile app development platform Buddybuild has been acquired by U.S. technology giant Apple. No financial terms were disclosed. As a result, Buddybuild has become part of Apple's Xcode engineering group, but will continue to operate from Vancouver. Launched in 2015 by CEO Dennis Pilarinos and Engineers Christopher Stott and Johnny Ting Shi, Buddybuild was backed by Amplify Partners, Bloomberg Beta, First Round Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, among others. Kleiner Perkins led the company's $10 million (US$7.6 million) Series A financing in 2016. In November, Apple bought Totem headset maker Vrvana.

U.S. e-commerce business eBay Inc has agreed to acquire Terapeak Inc, a Canadian e-commerce supply, demand and pricing data and analytics platform. No financial terms were disclosed. With the deal's close, expected before the end of this year, eBay said it will begin integrating functionality from Terapeak into its Seller Hub to help merchants manage and scale their operations. Launched in 2004 by Andrew Sukow and Anthony Sukow, Terapeak has its offices in Victoria, British Columbia and Toronto. It has been backed by Canadian growth equity firm Georgian Partners and other investors. Georgian invested $4 million in the company in 2010.
