American Capital Strategies will be added Friday to the Standard & Poor’s 500, an index of the publicly traded stocks of 500 large-cap companies and considered a prime economic indicator of US markets.
The publicly traded private equity firm is to take the place of Dollar General, a discount retailer being taken private by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts in a $7.3-billion transaction.
Headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, American Capital has been publicly traded since 1997. It recently raised $1 billion in its 29th public offering.
With $12 billion in assets, it is the third-largest publicly traded alternative asset manager in the US. The two largest such publicly traded firms in the US, The Blackstone Group and Fortress Investment Group, are not part of the S&P 500 index.
