BTI Systems Inc., an Ottawa-based networking systems and software company, secured US$10 million in new growth funding. The deal was led by existing investor Bain Capital Ventures, with the participation of BDC Venture Capital, Covington Funds and GrowthWorks. BTI, which has raised more than US$33 million from venture capital firms since the first quarter of 2011, also announced the expansion of the company's presence with a new office in Palo Alto, California.

Total Energy Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of French oil and gas producer Total SA, brought additional capital to a second closing of the US$37.3 million Series D financing of energy storage solutions provider LightSail Energy Inc. The deal's first closing, which included Khosla Ventures, Bill Gates and Canadian venture capital firm Innovacorp, took place in late 2012. Founded in 2009, LightSail has its head office in Berkeley, California. The company operates in Canada through the Nova Scotia-based LightSail Canada Inc.

Upverter Inc., a company focused on the development of a cloud-engineering platform for hardware design, has obtained C$650,000 in seed-stage funding, according to a report by TechCrunch. The Toronto, Ontario-based Upverter, which was founded in 2010 by engineering students at the University of Waterloo, is backed by a group of angel investors and entrepreneurs, including YouTube founding team member Christina Brodbeck and Xobni co-founder Adam Smith.

Canadian venture capital firm Vanedge Capital has led a US$5 million Series B financing of San Francisco-based Playnomics Inc., a provider of data science and predictive analytics for mobile, social and browser games. Joining in the round were existing investors in the company FirstMark Capital and XSeed Capital. Tony Lam, Principal of the Vancouver, British Columbia-based Vanedge, has also joined Playnomics' Board of Directors.

Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) saw its net assets under management rise above the C$60 billion mark in 2012, increasing C$5.7 billion year over year. The Canadian pension fund also posted a 10% return on its total investments last year, based on "strong performance in its private market portfolio". OMERS' overall private market portfolio had a 13.8% investment return, led by returns of 19.2% from internally-managed buyout fund OMERS Private Equity.
