She will work ut of the New York office and will provide services to private equity firms, investment and commercial banks and others involved in mergers and acquisitions. Birkmann, 42, was previously senior counsel at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York.

MabCure Inc. secured a $10 million funding commitment from Centurion Private Equity LLC. MabCure is a New York-based biotechnology company. It plans to use proceeds to fund clinical trials and ongoing research and development efforts. The company also plans to use the funds for general corporate purposes. Centurion is an institutional investor managed by Roswell Capital Partners LLC of Alpharetta, Ga.

Xact Technology LLC and for Iridium Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: IRDM) formed a satellite connectivity partnership. Xact agreed to become as a value-added reseller for Iridium, and will develop a dual-mode cellular/satellite GPS tracking and machine-to-machine (M2M) communication device. Flat World Knowledge secured $15 million in Series B funding. Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments and Bessemer Venture Partners led the financing. Several existing investors participated in the latest funding including Valhalla Partners, GSA Venture Partners (formerly Greenhill SAVP) and High Peaks Venture Partners. Several angel investors also took part. Flat World Knowledge is an Irvington, NY-based publisher of free and open college textbooks.

Kabam raised $30 million in series C funding and plans to use the capital for its growth plans. Redpoint Ventures of Menlo Park, Calif., and Intel Capital of Santa Clara, Calif., led the round. Additional funding came from original investor Canaan Partners. Kabam is a Redwood City, Calif.-based leading developer of multiplayer social games.
