Cambridge to deliver Australian PE and VC data

The independent consulting firm will begin to issue quarterly data on Australian markets, similar to its existing arrangements with the NVCA and EMPEA.

Cambridge Associates and the Australian Private Equity and Venture Capital Association Limited (AVCAL) will begin to issue independent quarterly data that will include Australian private equity and venture capital returns compared to other market indices.

Under the agreement, AVCAL will provide its members with aggregate Australian private equity and venture capital benchmark data and statistics.

Australian private equity and venture capital industry participants have been increasingly seeking to develop a robust and accurate set of performance statistics in which all the industry stakeholders can have a high level of conviction in the reliability, accuracy and coverage of the data.

“The Australian private equity and venture capital industry has grown into a well developed market and today comprises a full array of investment opportunities for both local private equity and venture capital firms as well as attracting the attention of foreign [firms],” Cambridge managing director Eugene Snyman told PEO. “Australian private equity and venture capital industry participants have been increasingly seeking to develop a robust and accurate set of performance statistics in which all the industry stakeholders can have a high level of conviction in the reliability, accuracy and coverage of the data.”

In January, Pacific Equity Partners acquired nearly half of Queensland-based renewable energy provider Energy Developments for A$139.9 million ($129.2 million; €89.2 million). The firm had in November of 2009 offered A$431 million to acquire all of Energy Developments’ shares.

Within Asia, limited partners view Australia as the most important destination for buyouts, followed by China, according to Coller Capital’s latest Global Private Equity Barometer.

Cambridge Associates derives its benchmarks for private equity and venture capital from the financial information in its proprietary database, and already has similar arrangements with the National Venture Capital Association and the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association. The firm provides consulting services to more than 800 clients globally and is known for its work with endowments as well as pensions.
