CVC’s US division snags Ripplewood pro

Former Ripplewood managing director Robert Berner has joined CVC Capital’s New York office, as the international private equity firm continues to strengthen its US presence.

Robert Berner is now the second partner to join CVC Capital Partners’ recently opened New York office.

Berner joins CVC from Ripplewood, where he served since 2001 as a managing director. Before, he was a managing director with Charterhouse and a principle in Morgan Stanley’s mergers and acquisitions department.

CVC’s New York office opened in January, and is headed by Christopher Stadler. He previously led the North American private equity group for Investcorp, the Bahrain-quoted alternatives group, and served as a director for financial services group Credit Suisse First Boston.

CVC recently acquired Danish beauty retailer Matas for an undisclosed amount, and is leading the private equity consortium considering a bid for the UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s.

Since 1996, CVC has raised and managed more than $24 billion in capital; its current funds total more than $17.5 billion. The 26-year old private equity firm closed its seventh fund, CVC European Equity Partners Tandem Fund, in January on $5.4 billion. The Tandem fund is a side-car fund to its €6 billion fund, CVC European Equity Partners Fund IV, closed in July 2005.
