Deal of the Year Awards

PE Hub unveils the private equity firms behind the best exits of 2025, from large-cap to small-cap, North America to Europe

Blackstone, Carlyle and Hellman & Friedman took home the top prize in PE Hubโ€™s 26th annual Deal of the Year Awards, which recognize exceptional exits that were realized in 2025.

The private equity trio won the Overall Deal of the Year Award, as well as the Large-Cap North America Award. The groupโ€™s $7.2 billion IPO of Medline Industries set several records: the largest private equity-backed IPO ever, the biggest healthcare IPO of all time and the largest public offering of 2025. All that came despite a difficult IPO market.

Listed in December, the IPO was 12x subscribed and valued the medical supplies maker at $65 billion, based on its closing price at the end of the first day of trading. The three large-cap investors had bought Medline in 2021 at a valuation of $34 billion, own equal shares and together hold the majority stake.

Getting such a deal over the line was no small feat. Starting with a wave of optimism about a big M&A comeback, last yearโ€™s dealmaking floundered in April as tariff turmoil roiled markets. But confidence began to return and grew, with Medlineโ€™s jumbo December listing a fitting symbol of the private equity industryโ€™s renewed expectations at the end of the year.

PE Hub received hundreds of nominations for the 2025 awards. Our criteria for selecting the winners included a wide array of metrics, such as multiples on invested capital; internal rates of return; EBITDA growth; employee retention, expansion and participation in exit proceeds; and add-on deals and organic growth. We also looked at investment rationale and plans, as well as methods of growth and how exits were made. And we considered the significance of transactions within a sector and how they exemplified the yearโ€™s challenges and opportunities.

Accel-KKR leaned into the fast-paced world of artificial intelligence as it grew the total addressable market of customer communications software company Smart Communications tenfold to over $10 billion. Its focus on bringing in the right people and patient sales process ensured it could command a reported $1.8 billion valuation as it exited to Cinven, having grown revenue 5x from below $50 million at entry in 2016. That approach brought the GP PE Hubโ€™s Large-Cap Europe Deal of the Year Award.

Kinderhook Industries bought Vehicle Accessories Inc in 2019 and grew it significantly through a period that was especially challenging for the auto industry. Many investors are seeking targets with the right combination of data and AI capabilities. Oakley Capital found a winning combo back in 2022, when it acquired legaltech business vLex. Only three years later, the firm sold vLex to strategic buyer Clio for $1 billion, earning PE Hubโ€™s Mid-Cap Europe Deal of the Year Award.

HIG Capital acquired promotional products supplier Koozie Group from Sociรฉtรฉ BIC for $85 million in 2017. Eight years later, the Miami-based PE firm sold its fellow Floridian to Mill Point portfolio company Garyline after a repositioning and organizational overhaul that belied its โ€œcorporate orphanโ€ origins. Koozie generated $270 million in revenue at exit, having come through adverse background conditions. That turnaround story made the exit the winner of PE Hubโ€™s Small-Cap North America Deal of the Year Award.

JC Flowersโ€™ eight-year hold of wealth manager HRK Lunis took many turns. The private equity firm had to build relationships with smaller, founder-owned businesses while making a series of add-ons, including merging Lunis with Huber, Reuss & Kollegen. By the time JC Flowers sold HRK Lunis to fellow private equity firm Seven2, the wealth managerโ€™s assets under management had grown 8x, PE Hub understands. That growth story sees JC Flowers receive PE Hubโ€™s Small-Cap Europe Deal of the Year Award and is one that the firm is using as a blueprint for future deals in the thriving sector.
