The Blackstone Group has hired Tom Kelly to head a new capital fundraising advisory service for businesses.
Kelly, a former managing director of investment banking firm KEMA Partners, has joined the private equity firm’s Menlo Park-based corporate advisory group to drive fundraisings for “a variety of businesses and corporations”, including private placements of equity and debt for privately-held and publicly traded corporate clients.
“We believe that this is a very opportune time to enter this business. Current markets are dislocated, or even shut, for conventional public financings. Clients are looking to their advisers to help them raise capital in innovative and non traditional ways,” Ivan Brockman, a Blackstone managing director said in a statement.
Prior to joining KEMA, Kelly headed the Private Capital Group at Montgomery & Company where he served a variety of roles including managing director and head of the private capital group. Before that, he was in change of West Coast private equity for Banc of America Securities in San Francisco, and an investment banker focused on private equity placements with Merrill Lynch and Robertson Stephens. Kelly has an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a 1st Class degree in Pharmacy from the UK’s Bradford University.
This is the second hire in as many weeks for Blackstone's corporate advisory group, which has also just appointed former UBS managing director David Bradley as head of its global chemicals practise.
