New York headquartered growth equity firm General Atlantic has appointed an operating partner in its Munich office, according to a statement from the firm.
Achim Berg is the former chief executive officer of media and business communication and technology services provider arvato, a subsidiary of German media conglomerate Bertelsmann. His appointment is effective April 1, and he will work closely with the firm’s portfolio companies both in Germany and globally.
“Achim Berg has a distinguished track record as an innovative and impactful executive at globally recognised technology and business services firms,” Jörn Nikolay, managing director and head of Germany at General Atlantic, said in the statement.
“As we continue to deepen our capabilities in Germany and across the EMEA region, we believe he will be an important resource to our companies looking to accelerate growth in Germany and beyond.”
At arvato, Bertelsmann’s largest division with 70,000 employees, Berg was responsible for the strategy and “operative” business. He was also a member of the Bertelsmann executive board. Prior to arvato Berg held several senior management positions at Microsoft.
General Atlantic has more than 100 investment professionals based across its offices in New York, Connecticut, Amsterdam, Beijing, Hong Kong, London, Mexico City, Mumbai, Munich, Palo Alto, São Paulo and Singapore.
In December General Atlantic promoted Nikolay to managing director and Roni Elchahal, Andrew Ferrer and Rajat Sood to principals, as reported by Private Equity International.
Nikolay joined General Atlantic in London in 2008 and relocated to Munich four years later to open the firm’s German office.
“We continue to see attractive opportunities in Germany and across Europe, and look forward to deepening our partnerships with innovative entrepreneurs and high-growth companies in the region,” General Atlantic chief executive Bill Ford said in a statement at the time.
Elchahal is based in London and responsible for the firm’s EMEA capital partnering efforts. Ferrer, based in New York, is a senior member of the retail and consumer team, and Sood, based in Mumbai, focuses on the financial services sector.
