General Atlantic has appointed Fabio Villegas, a Colombian businessman, as special advisor, according to the firm.
Villegas is president of Latin American hotel chain Decameron and previously served as chief executive of Colombian airline carrier Avianca for 10 years. In his new role, he will work closely with General Atlantic's teams in Latin America to identify and support business opportunities in the region.
“Fabio's deep knowledge of the Colombian business environment and his vast network of relationships make him an exceptional asset to our firm, our portfolio companies, and our prospective new investments in the region,” Bill Ford, CEO of General Atlantic, said in a statement.
The firm's growing team of advisors comprises senior executives with industry and operational expertise in key focus areas for General Atlantic and its portfolio companies. That team has more than 20 advisors, including four focused on Latin America, according to its website.
The New York-based firm has been active in Latin America. It previously invested private pension fund administrator SURA Asset Management, which is based in Colombia, and it also supported Grupo Sura in its acquisition of ING Assets in Latin America.
General Atlantic also has offices in Amsterdam, Beijing, Greenwich, Hong Kong, London, Mexico City, Mumbai, Munich, Palo Alto, Sao Paulo and Singapore.
