Toronto online marketplace VarageSale has appointed Janet Bannister, a partner at Canadian venture capital firm Real Ventures, to its board of directors. Bannister, who joined Real Ventures in 2014, is a Kijiji founder. VarageSale said she will help it scale across North America and support its monetization strategy. VarageSale, which provides an app to buy and sell used items locally, also reported a doubling of its user base in 2016. Founded in 2012, the company is backed by Real Ventures, iNovia Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital, Version One Ventures and others.

Scott Kupor was named chair of the National Venture Capital Association board for the 2017-18 period, the organization announced at its annual meeting in Washington. Kupor, a managing partner at Andreessen Horowitz, succeeds Venky Ganesan, a managing director at Menlo Ventures. The NVCA also named Alexis Borisy, partner at Third Rock Ventures, as chair-elect for 2018-19.

Canadian investment firm PenderFund Capital Management has hired Maria Pacella as senior vice president, private equity. In the role, Pacella will focus on launching a private equity fund that targets growth opportunities in the technology sector. Pacella, who has 16 years of experience of investing in emerging technology companies, joins PenderFund from Shoreline Ventures, where she served as a venture partner. She previously held senior executive roles at Beedie Capital Partners and GrowthWorks. PenderFund has its headquarters in Vancouver.

Shermaine Tilley, a managing partner at CTI Life Sciences Fund, and Dion Madsen, a senior managing partner at BDC Capital, have left the board of directors of Zymeworks Inc (NYSE, TSX: ZYME). The resignations, which also included Eli Lilly & Co's Kerry Blanchard, follow Zymeworks' initial public offering in Canada and the United States, which wrapped up earlier this month. Vancouver-based Zymeworks, a biotherapeutics provider, went public after raising nearly US$150 million from a mix of venture capital and strategic investors.

83North, which invests in Israel and Europe and recently raised $250 million for its fourth fund, announced that David Buttress is joining the firm as a general partner. Buttress is the former chief executive of Just Eat, which held an IPO on the London Stock Exchange in 2014. 83North was an early investor in Just Eat. Buttress becomes the sixth general partner of the firm, and he will be based out of the London office, although he will focus on deals throughout Europe.
