Carlyle buys online marketing business to merge with German portfolio company

The Carlyle Group has bought Bigmouthmedia as the online marketing sector approaches a global value of $20 billion.

The Carlyle Group has bought Bigmouthmedia, a UK digital marketing agency, from the Steven Leach, the company’s founder and chief executive officer.  Carlyle will merge the company with its existing portfolio company, Global Media, a web marketing company with headquarters in Germany.

This will allow Carlyle to form the largest independent search marketing company with more than 300 customers including Hilton, a hotel chain; British Airways, a UK-based airline; AOL, an internet company, and Barclays, a UK bank.

Global Media is a web marketing company for internationally focussed activities in continental Europe and Asia.

The Carlyle Group invested in Global Media in June 2006.  The merged company will continue to operate with both brands of Bigmouthmedia in the UK and the US, and Global Media across the rest of Europe and Asia.

Leach will continue to run the UK and US operations of the combined business, while Thomas Gerteis, chief executive officer of Global Media, will be chief executive officer of the combined business.
