Last year saw private equity’s highest annual capital raise since the 2008 financial crisis with $537.2 billion gathered across 812 vehicles, according to PEI data.
The previous record was set in 2017 with approximately $502.6 billion raised.
Fund sizes have increased, underscoring the trend of LPs concentrating commitments on longstanding GP relationships. Last year the average fund size was $661.2 million, a 12 percent increase on the previous year’s $590 million.
More than a quarter of the capital – $137.9 billion – was raised by the 10 largest PE funds: the $26.2 billion Blackstone Capital Partners VIII, the $17.5 billion Advent International GPE IX and the $16 billion Vista Equity Partners VII.
