Samurai Incubate Africa

Samurai Incubate Africa is the Africa‑facing investment arm of Tokyo‑based early‑stage venture capital firm Samurai Incubate, launched in May 2018 (initially under the name Leapfrog Ventures before its rebrand in 2019). It specialises in seed and pre‑Series A investments across markets such as Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Egypt, with typical ticket sizes of roughly US $50,000 – 500,000 (and up to around $736,000 following its second fund closure). Sector‑agnostic in principle, its more frequent investments have focused on fintech, agritech, insurtech, logistics, energy, healthcare, social mobility, and entertainment. As of its second fund—closed at approximately JP¥2 billion (~US $18.4 million)—the firm had backed around 26–31 African startups, including Eden Life, MPost, Wallets Africa, Exuus, Pricepally, Medsaf and Oneport.

This institution is a global alternative asset manager with a multi-decade track record across private markets. The firm invests on behalf of institutional partners through a family of strategies spanning several asset classes and regions. Its teams operate from offices around the world, working with investors and portfolio companies over long holding periods. Subscribe for the full profile, background and analysis.
