Ottawa, Ontario's Halogen Software Inc., a provider of cloud-based talent management solutions, has completed its previously-announced initial public offering on the Toronto Stock Exchange, raising just over $50 million under the symbol "HGN". At the same time, the company's U.S. venture capital investor JMI Equity sold shares in a secondary transaction, raising gross proceeds of approximately $5 million. Halogen has been venture-backed since 1999.

AltaGas Ltd., a Calgary-based energy infrastructure business, has completed its previously-announced buy of Blythe Energy LLC, which owns a 507 megawatt natural gas-fired plant as well as a 67 mile electric transmission line in Southern California. The acquisition was priced at US$515 million. Blythe Energy was a portfolio company of New York-based LS Power Equity Advisors, a private equity investor in the energy and power industry.

Pebble Technology, launched by Canadian entrepreneur Eric Migicovsky, a University of Waterloo engineering graduate, has raised US$15 million in Series A financing from U.S. venture capital firm Charles River Ventures and affiliated investors, confirms the blog of Palo Alto, California-based crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, which helped Pebble get underway last year. Pebble produces smart watches which connect by Bluetooth to iPhone or Android devices.
