Fundraising in the first quarter of the year was the biggest haul since the global financial crisis, PEI data show.

Between January and March, some 277 funds gathered at least $180.2 billion – a 10 percent increase from the equivalent period last year. Fundraising volume also increased across strategies, and buyouts and growth equity funds made up almost 70 percent of capital raised.

The average fund size dipped slightly to $663 million but remains the second-highest since 2015.

Three buyout funds – KKR Asian Fund IV, Apax X and Genstar Capital Partners X  – raised at least $10 billion each.

North America-focused funds gathered 40 percent of capital raised during the quarter. Funds dedicated to Europe and Asia had significant increases in Q1, compared with the equivalent period last year. Capital raised by Europe-focused funds soared 287 percent, and Asia-Pacific funds grew 67 percent.
