2021 looks set to become a record-breaking year for private equity fundraising, with the $535.3 billion gathered in the first nine months representing the highest total for that period since 2008, PEI data shows.

The 10 largest funds to have closed in the first three quarters of 2021 amassed $143 billion between them, $40 billion more than in the equivalent period last year. The continued flight to familiarity has contributed to heftier fund sizes for the likes of Hellman & Friedman, KKR and Bain Capital, among others.

With a further $797 billion targeted by funds still in market – including $22 billion each for Carlyle Partners VIII and Thoma Bravo XV – the year may well end on a new high.
