Endowment private markets head joins ADIA

Craig Nickels, who took over the private markets portfolio at Washington University in 2007, now manages US fund investments for the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

Craig Nickels, the former head of private markets at the Washington University Investment Management Company, has joined the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority as head of US fund investments in the private equities department, an ADIA spokesperson confirmed.

Nickels took over the role in December, the spokesperson said.

Nickels’ former role as head of private markets was open as of early Tuesday, according to the endowment’s website. A spokesperson for the endowment did not return several calls for comment.

Nickels joined the endowment in 2007, prior to which he co-founded the Alignment Capital Group, an alternative asset consulting firm. Before that, Nickels worked as a portfolio manager of private markets for the University of Texas Investment Management Company.

ADIA has been expanding its private equity team, which is led by executive director Hareb Al Darmaki.

Last year, ADIA hired former AXA Private Equity chief operating officer Christophe Florin as head of emerging markets fund investments in the private equities department. The sovereign fund also brought on Colm Lanigan as co-head of principal investments in the private equities department.
