Stirling Square wins $250m cornerstone

The new European mid-market firm, which includes a number of former Compass Partners personnel, has received a large commitment from Citigroup.

Stirling Square Capital Partners has announced that it has received a $250m commitment to its inaugural fund from global financial services giant Citigroup.

The firm, where three of its six partners are ex-Compass Partners, says that it is aiming to invest in companies across Europe that have enterprise values ranging from $50m to $500m. The firm puts particualr emphasis on its 'strong local European expertise,' and references Germany, Italy, Scandinavia, the United Kingdom and France as key target markets.

The six partners at Stirling Capital are Martin Calderbank, ex-Compass Partners and Candover; Jakob Förschner, also ex-Compass Partners and CVC Capital Partners; Bolaji Odunsi, ex Compass Partners and BC Partners; Stefano Bonfiglio, ex DLJ Merchant Banking Partners; Stuyvie Comfort, ex Citigroup Venture Capital and Alchemy and Gregorio Napoleone, ex DLJ Merchant Banking Partners.

Jakob Förschner said: 'Our partners are predominantly nationals of the markets in which they operate and bring strong local market knowledge.  Our mix of nationalities also enables us to see cross-border opportunities from an international perspective. Citigroup's commitment will enable us to realise our goal of building local champions into international players.  Whilst we intend in due course to raise additional sums from further sources we are actively pursuing investments at present.'
