Barclays throws more weight behind leveraged finance effort

David Shaw is to leave UBS Warburg to join Barclays Capital’s financial sponsor coverage team.

Barclays Capital, the investment banking arm of Barclays Bank, is continuing its hiring spree aimed at developing a major force in leveraged finance.

A week after appointing Ana Gay as an associate director in the principal sponsor coverage team, the bank has poached David Shaw from UBS Warburg to join Gay et al as a director.

At UBS, where he spent nine years, Shaw was a director in the Leveraged Finance Group. Prior to joining the Swiss investment bank, he had held positions at The First National Bank of Chicago and Natwest.

Chris Coles, who heads up Barclays’ financial sponsor coverage, said he expected Shaw to make a major contribution to the bank’s position in leveraged finance . “Over the past year we have considerably strengthened our origination capability, and David’s appointment is yet another achievement for our recruitment efforts.”

Other recent recruits added to Coles’ team include Tyrone Cooney who looks after French LBO clients and a team of professionals from WestLB.
