Early stage venture capitalist Benchmark Capital has hired its third European general partner. Barry Maloney is CEO of Ireland’s second largest mobile operator Esat Digifone.
And the Benchmark team will be further bolstered by the arrival of Bruce Dunlevie in the summer. Dunlevie is one of Benchmark’s founders.
Benchmark hopes Maloney’s mobile expertise will strengthen its investments in the sector. Maloney said he was “delighted” to join Benchmark.
Maloney started Esat Digifone in 1997 and the company has become Ireland’s second largest mobile operator. It has revenues of IR£400m ($456m) and has been bought by British Telecom for IR£2bn.
Benchmark manages about $2.3bn of committed capital. Its European fund closed at $750m and started investing last summer.
