The Carlyle Group raises $18.5bn

The global alternative asset manager closes latest US buyout fund $3.5 billion above target.

The Carlyle Group has held a final close for Carlyle Partners VII at its $18.5 billion hard-cap, far exceeding its $15 billion target. The US buyout fund makes majority and minority investments across aerospace, defense & government, consumer & retail, industrial & transportation, and TMT sectors.

Limited partners in the fund include the Washington State Investment Board, Texas County and District Retirement System, the Michigan Department of Treasury and the Florida State Board of Administration.

Carlyle Partners VII is 42 percent larger than its predecessor, which closed at $13 billion in November 2013.
