Merrills veteran joins Mercapital board

Claudio Aguirre Pemán, a former head of Spanish operations at Merrill Lynch, has joined Spanish private equity investor Mercapital to help the firm raise and invest capital.

Spanish private equity investor Mercapital has appointed Claudio Aguirre Pemán a non-executive vice president and member of the firm’s board.

Formerly a senior investment banker, Aguirre worked for Chase Manhattan and Goldman Sachs in Spain and the UK before joining Merrill Lynch in 1994 to develop the firm’s Spanish and Portuguese businesses. In 1996, he became CEO of Merrills in Iberia.

Aguirre has worked with Mercapital before. In a statement, he said he knew the firm from being involved in past fundraisings and from advising on the floatations of portfolio companies such as Mecalux, an industrial shelving company.

Earlier this year, Aguirre founded Altamar Private Equity, Spain’s first dedicated private equity fund of funds manager. At Altamar, Aguirre serves as executive president.

Mercapital is currently investing Mercapital Spanish Private Equity Fund II, which held a final close in January 2001 on €600 million. The firm has over €1 billion of capital under management.
