New European MD for Carlyle

The Carlyle Group has appointed Wolfgang Hanrieder, of Star Ventures, new managing director for its European venture capital fund.

The Carlyle Group has announced the appointment of Wolfgang Hanrieder, former managing partner at Star Ventures Management, as a managing director for its European VC fund, Carlyle Europe Venture Partners (CEVP).

Hanrieder will focus on increasing the fund's visibility in Germany and other European countries, and on making new investments in the communications technology and material sciences areas. Dr Hanrieder will join Carlyle managing director Jacques Garaialde as co-head of CEVP. He will be based in Carlyle's offices in London and Munich.

Whilst at Star Ventures, a Munich-based international venture capital firm with $1bn under management, Dr Hanrieder oversaw more than 20 deals that were transacted in the IT and medical sectors. 'Carlyle offers a much broader private equity environment to work in,' said Dr Hanrieder. 'Carlyle has a strong reputation for capitalising on its global network of relationships to further the development of portfolio companies across borders.”

Carlyle Europe Venture Partners (CEVP) is a E730m fund that focuses on investing in European companies developing core infrastructure technologies and services. Investments are concentrated in the following sectors: material sciences, communications technologies, communications services, enterprise and infrastructure software and online financial services.

CEVP recently led the E30m third-round funding of Reef, a Belgium-based global provider of e-business software applications. The fund invests in companies at all stages of development, committing up to E30m over the lifetime of an investment. The 17-member team is drawn from a wide number of European nationalities and a broad spectrum of professional experience.
