If one is going to appear in the The Daily Mirror, a newspaper not famous for its discretion or subtlety, one might as well be on this list – “Britain's Top 100 Self-Made Millionaires.” Toping the list is fashion tycoon Philip Green with £3.76 billion in net worth. Virgin's Richard Branson is number two. Number 78 is Guy Hands, whose estimated £155 million fortune is listed by the Mirror as derived from “banking,” but private equity insiders will know Hands from buyout firm Terra Firma Capital Partners and, before that, Nomura's groundbreaking private investment team. Of Terra Firma, the Mirror notes only that the firm “went into waste recycling last year.”

Hands can take satisfaction from the fact that he beat Mick Jagger's fortune by a cool £5 million, which landed the knighted Rolling Stones singer at Number 80.
