Statistics from Cleantech Group show that venture capital investment in clean technology has been dominated by energy generation for the last three years. More than $8 billion was invested in cleantech energy generation by North American, European and Israeli venture capitalists between 2005 and Q2 2008. Just $330 million of venture capital was invested during the same period in each of the water, air and environment technology sectors. Clean energy investment has become highly topical given the recent high price of fossil fuels and looming prospect of an energy crisis. However, it remains to be seen whether the recent decline in the oil price will result in falling levels of investment in the clean energy space as traditional energy once again becomes more affordable.
