SJ Berwin hires debt specialist in Paris

Colin Millar has been appointed to spearhead SJ Berwin’s banking and acquisition finance activities from its Paris office.

SJ Berwin, the London-based international law firm, has appointed Colin Millar to develop its banking and finance practice in Paris.

Most recently, Millar was head of the banking department at the Paris office of law firm Simmons & Simmons. Having started his career in 1986 at Freshfields in London, Millar moved to Paris in 1989. He joined Simmons & Simmons in 1992 and became a partner in 1994.

In his previous role, Millar advised French and foreign banks and other financial institutions on the financing of acquisitions, including leveraged buyouts, senior debt, mezzanine, syndicated lending and structured finance. Millar also specialises in investment services and asset management, particularly in relation to hedge funds.

SJ Berwin has made strides to expand its pan-European banking and finance practice over the last year. Recent hires have included Jeremy Cross and Nick Terras in London and Thomas Schrell in Frankfurt.

SJ Berwin senior partner George Pinkham said the appointments would “reinforce [the firm’s] position in Europe with respect to cross-border leveraged acquisitions and M&A”.

In October last year, SJ Berwin hired Tim Wright from rival Clifford Chance to bolster its London-based buyout practice.
